Let Me Tell You Three Big Reasons To Buy  Washable Rugs

Boys room rug that is washable

Who knew there were WASHABLE RUGS available in Australia? Yep you heard me right,  machine washable rugs!!!! Can you believe it?

The rugs you and I have been needing in my life with three kids and big fluffy hairy dog and many accidental spills from playdates (kids and adults included). The possibilities are endless and I am sure you could add a few to the list.

Those moments when you and I have thought "How nice it would be to have a rug in that space" and then thought a second later "what was I thinking it would be
dirty within seconds in this household!" are no more.

So many families come to me and say they are waiting till their kids grow up before they buy a new rug. I stand to correct them "Why wait?" when you can buy a rug that will stand the test of time and will stand the test of mess, food, wee , poo, wine ..... the list goes on... you get it ! Why wait when can just throw them in the washing machine.

So let me give you four big reasons why washable rugs are the answer to your living rooms and worry free.

1. Made from natural yarns - 100% cotton they contain absolutely no nasties or chemicals. With no backing they can be washed in your domestic washing machine or at your local laundromat or dry cleaner for the bigger rugs. Our washable cotton rugs come in many sizes. The smaller sizes can usually be washed in your domestic washer but the larger living room sizes usually require a large washing machine. Many electronic brands are bringing out bigger capacity washing machines which is great news for bigger families and of course our rugs.

2.  Great for Allergy Sufferers or Messy Humans-  no need to worry about mess or dust on your rugs. You can now add comfort , style and texture to your room even if your family lives, eats, drinks and breathes all over your rug.

3. Great for Pet Owners - have a new puppy ? or fur baby? - knowing that you can chuck in the wash is a great relief. Read more info over on our Pet Friendly Rugs post for other pet friendly options.

4. Sustainable - no more chucking cheap rugs in the rubbish bin once they are soiled. This is bad not only for the environment but for your hip pocket. Many families have come to me and say they just chuck out cheap rugs after one season as they just don't last. This scares me to be honest and we need to be looking after our environment for future generations. Our washable rugs mean that they are no longer destined for the rubbish heap.

You can read more about our Sustainability here.

5. Tumble Dry - Yes you can dry them in your dryer. They actually benefit from a tumble dry in your home machine. It fluffs them all up again so they look brand new.

Don't have a tumble dryer - hang out to dry and once dry give it a vacuum to fluff up the fibres once more.

Nursery Rugs

Welcoming a new baby is the most exciting time in ones life and you want your nursery to look perfect as well as be practical. Choosing the right nursery rug will tie the whole nursery together. Choosing a practical washable rug for babies and toddlers is a wise choice.

Late night feeds with baby spew and poo are not a worry when you have a washable rug in the nursery.

We would recommend a round rug for a nursery space. A round rug you can off centre it next to the cot or put next to the changing table.

KIDS ROOM RUGS

Styling a kids room that will grow with them is important. Something that is stylish but practical on all levels. Think about the size and shape of the rug depending on the furniture and size of room. For more tips visit our Furniture Layout Guide blog post.

For kids rooms I would choose something soft and a round or smaller rug will usually suffice in a bedroom. Go larger for a playroom.

Here are some products and ideas from our washable rugs Australia range.

WASHABLE RUGS IN THE LIVING ROOM

We make machine washable rugs in extra large sizes of 200 x 300cm great for main bedrooms, playrooms or living rooms. Worry free with messes washable rugs can be a great choice in your living room. We would suggest an anti slip mat under them however as they are a lighter weight rug. They have no nasty backing allowing them to be washed so do need a rug pad to stop them slipping in high traffic areas.

Here are some ideas of styling a washable rug in your living room.

I get asked about our washable rugs everyday by people, especially  mums that can't believe you can put them in a washing machine. Yes you can wash these rugs at home or in a laundromat.  Which makes them the perfect rug for kids, families, pets and allergy or asthma sufferers.

Let me tell you a bit about our washable rugs and why on so many levels they are good for you, your family and the environment.

NO NASTIES OR CHEMICALS ON OUR RUGS

Firstly our rugs are made with 100% Cotton with no backing - so that means no nasties or chemicals are used in the production. It also means that these rugs are sustainable, made with natural fibres only. Instead of throwing out your rug when its dirty you can wash it over and over again. At the end of its lifetime this fibre will eventually breakdown after about 50years unlike polyester or machine made rugs that typically take over 200 years to biodegrade.

So what is a polyester rug?  You can find out more over on buying chemical free rugs here but put simply it is a manmade chemical fibre that is cheaper to produce. Often cheaper means harmful. Whilst they are stain resistant they come with nasty chemicals to make this happen.

Polypropylene or  polyester rugs contain toxic byproducts which when inhaled may cause certain problems like headache, allergies, dizziness, or nausea.  These gases are the “new carpet” smell that you get when the carpet is new.

Shop our washable rugs are made with 100 % cotton and yes you can wash them.

The smaller sized rugs up to about an 8kg can be washed many times over in your domestic washing machine where as the larger sized living room rugs of  2 x3m size will need to be taken to a laundromat or drycleaner.
The size of laundromat machine required will be around a 15- 16kg machine and will set you back around $12-15 a wash.

Here is a recent photoshoot we did at my local laundromat. We washed our Cotton Berber Black in around 40mins and it cost me $13. Use normal washing detergents - don't use bleach. Set the machine to a cooler setting, 30-40 degrees is good  as you do not want your cotton rug to shrink!

Drying your rug: YES YOU CAN TUMBLE DRY OH HAPPY HOME RUGS

Our preferred option is to hang it out to dry on a sunny day. The rug however does get heavy when wet and if you want to wash it in winter you can put it in a  commercial or dometic tumble dryer on a warm setting.  We did this for about 40mins on a warm setting as we washed ours on a cold day. Using the dryer fluffs up the natural fibres again so it looks again like new!

Cotton Berber Washable Rug for Families

Cotton can look a bit bedraggled after it's washed but a shake and a vacuum will fluff up the fibres again.

One more thing is that cotton is a natural product so like other natural fibres it will pill slightly at first. Washing will definitely help to settle the pilling of your rug down.

Why not do a few loads while you are there at the laundromat and take your doonas and blankets for a wash all at the same time?
